Key Concepts

The Cranium

The braincase — a large sphere that dominates the top of the head. Beginners consistently draw it too small.

Think of a large egg sitting on a smaller egg (the face). The cranium is always bigger than you think.

The cranium is approximately spherical and makes up about 2/3 of the total head volume. The face hangs below and forward.

Study the temporal lines, parietal eminences, and occipital bone to understand how the cranium is not a perfect sphere but subtly faceted.

Bony Landmarks

The key bony protrusions that create bumps, ridges, and shadows on the face surface.

Brow ridge (supraorbital), cheekbone (zygomatic), chin (mandible symphysis). These push out through skin and fat.

Learn to feel these on your own face. Brow ridge, orbit rim, nasal bone, cheekbone, jaw angle, chin — six anchor points.

Study Bridgman's planes of the head. Every facial plane change is caused by an underlying bony or muscular structure.

The Orbit (Eye Socket)

A bony ring that the eye sits inside. Understanding its form is key to drawing a convincing eye in its socket.

The orbit is not a circle but a slightly angled quadrilateral. The top rim is the brow ridge, the bottom is the cheek.

The eye is recessed within the orbit, creating shadow above (lid fold) and below (under-eye). The brow sits on the superior rim.

The orbital rim juts forward and then curves back steeply — this creates the characteristic eye socket shadow in side lighting.

The Mandible (Jaw)

The only movable bone in the skull. Its shape defines the lower third of the face and jaw type.

The jaw has a body (front) and two rami (sides) that angle up to the ears. The jaw angle is a key landmark.

Wide jaw angles create a square face. Narrow angles create a more triangular face. The jaw also determines chin projection.

The mandibular condyle articulates at the TMJ, just in front of the ear canal. This joint is what allows the mouth to open.

Key Concepts

Eyes at the Midpoint

The most commonly violated proportion rule. The eyes sit at the halfway point of the skull height, not near the top.

Hold your pencil horizontally at eye level on any person — it sits right at the middle of their head. The cranium takes up the top half.

This feels wrong because hair adds visual mass above the eyes, creating the illusion the eyes are higher. Measure, don't assume.

On a 3/4 or tilted head, the eye midline follows the curve of the skull surface — it is a curved line, not a flat horizontal.

Vertical Thirds

Divide the face (not the full head) into three roughly equal horizontal zones.

Zone 1: hairline to brow. Zone 2: brow to base of nose. Zone 3: base of nose to chin. Ears span zones 2 and 3.

The mouth sits about 1/3 of the way up the lower third zone, so the chin-to-mouth space is about twice the mouth-to-nose space.

These thirds shift with age. Children have a compressed lower face (short zone 3). Elderly faces may lengthen in the middle zone.

Eye Width Fifths

The face width divides into 5 equal units, each roughly one eye wide.

Left to right: edge of face · outer canthus · inner canthus · nose bridge · inner canthus · outer canthus · edge of face.

The inter-eye distance (gap between eyes) equals one eye width. The nose base equals the inner eye corner distance.

Mouth width roughly aligns with the inner edge of each iris (not the pupils). This is your most reliable mouth-width guide.

Reading Deviations

Canons describe averages, not individuals. Likeness comes from accurately measuring deviation from canon.

Notice whether a person's eyes are closer set or wider set than the one-eye-width standard. This one feature changes the whole read.

Map three or four key deviations per face: eye spacing, nose length vs middle third, mouth width vs inter-iris distance.

Caricature exaggerates these very deviations. Portrait art records them faithfully. Both require first seeing them clearly.

Key Concepts

Eye as Sphere

The eyeball is a sphere. The eyelids are skin draped over this sphere — they follow its curvature.

When drawing the eye, first draw a circle. The iris is a disk on the front surface. The lids wrap around this sphere.

This sphere quality means the eyelid has thickness at its edge (the lid margin). You can see this edge when looking up or down.

The upper lid casts a shadow onto the iris when lit from above — this shadow is critical for making the eye look dimensional, not flat.

Upper vs Lower Lid

The upper and lower lids are NOT mirror images. They have different curvatures and different relationships to the iris.

Upper lid: highest point is slightly inward of center. It covers the top of the iris. Lower lid: highest point is outward of center.

The upper lid moves dramatically. The lower lid barely moves. In a wide-open eye, the upper lid retracts; the lower stays put.

Upper lid thickness creates the lid fold (crease) above — the depth and position of this fold is key to eye character and ethnicity.

Iris & Pupil

The iris is always partially cut off by the upper lid. A fully visible iris (like a complete circle) looks startled or dead.

In a relaxed eye, the upper lid covers about 1-2mm of the iris top. The pupil is centered in the iris and always circular.

The iris color appears darker at the top (shadow from the upper lid). The pupil dilates in low light and constricts in bright light.

The highlight sits on the cornea, not the iris — it is a reflection of the light source and can overlap the pupil and iris both.

Inner & Outer Canthus

The corners of the eye have distinct anatomy that dramatically affects the eye's character.

Inner canthus (medial): sits lower, has a small pink area (lacrimal caruncle / tear duct). The lower lid angling down here is critical.

Outer canthus (lateral): sits slightly higher than the inner. In most faces it is slightly higher; lower outer canthus reads as tired or sad.

The epicanthal fold (monolid) covers the inner canthus in many East Asian faces, creating a distinctive eye shape with no visible lid crease.

Nose as Three Forms

Simplify the nose into: the bridge (triangular wedge), the tip (sphere), and the wings/ala (two side planes).

The bridge casts shadow on the side planes. The tip sphere has a highlight at its top center. The nostrils are darkest.

In flat lighting, the nose is almost invisible — it reads from shadow shapes on the underside and beside the wings.

The septal cartilage divides the underside of the nose into two nostril openings separated by the columella.

Mouth as Cylinder

The mouth wraps around the cylindrical muzzle (the teeth and gums form a half-cylinder). This is why the corners recede in space.

Draw a cylinder first. Wrap the lip shapes around it. The upper lip curves over the cylinder. The lower lip rests below.

This cylinder is what makes mouths in 3/4 view look correct — the far corner of the mouth is smaller and higher than the near corner.

The philtrum above the upper lip has two ridges (philtral columns) that converge at the cupid's bow. These catch light beautifully.

Lip Anatomy

The lips have three lobes on the upper lip (cupid's bow) and two lobes on the lower. Each has a distinct form.

Upper lip: center tubercle (the bow's peak), two lateral lobes. Lower lip: two large convex lobes separated by a center crease.

The upper lip is usually darker in value than the lower lip, which faces upward and catches more direct light.

The white roll (a small ridge above the upper lip) and the labiomental crease (below the lower lip) are key for realistic rendering.

Mouth Width Rule

A reliable guide: the corners of the mouth (commissures) align approximately with the inner edges of the irises.

Check this on any face in a photo — the mouth width correlates strongly with the inter-pupil distance, shifted inward slightly.

Wide mouths deviate outward from this rule; narrow mouths stay well within it. This deviation is a key likeness indicator.

On a 3/4 view, the near commissure is visible but the far one may be partially hidden — account for foreshortening.

The Ear Helix

The outer rim of the ear follows a C-shaped curve from above the canal down to the lobe. It is the defining outer shape of the ear.

Start every ear with the helix curve. It determines the overall size and tilt of the ear. The rest of the anatomy fits inside.

The helix starts at the top, curls outward and around, then transitions to the lobe at the bottom. The lobe is attached or free-hanging.

The ear tilts slightly backward at the top — it does not sit flat against the skull. The helix root enters the skull at roughly 15–20° from vertical.

Ear Placement

The ear spans from the brow line down to the base of the nose. This is your most reliable ear placement guide.

In a profile view: the ear sits in the back third of the head, roughly centered vertically between the eye line and jaw line.

In a 3/4 view: the ear appears foreshortened. Use the brow-to-nose-base height to set the correct vertical span.

The top of the ear connects to the temporal line of the skull. The bottom attaches to the mastoid region just behind the jaw.

Jaw Shape & Face Type

The mandible angle (the angle where the jaw rami meets the body) is the primary determinant of face shape.

Wide jaw angle (≈90°) → square face. Narrow jaw angle (≈120°+) → tapered, heart-shaped or oval face.

The chin's projection (how far it sticks forward relative to the jaw body) also varies dramatically between individuals.

Female jaws are typically smaller, smoother, with less prominent gonial angle. Male jaws tend to be wider and more angular — though this varies enormously.

Neck Anatomy

The neck is never perfectly vertical — it tilts forward. The SCM (sternocleidomastoid) is its primary visible muscle.

The SCM runs from behind the ear (mastoid process) diagonally to the collarbone. It is the rope-like form you see from the side.

The cervical spine follows an S-curve: it tilts slightly forward at the base, meaning the head sits forward of the shoulders, not directly above.

Beginners draw necks too short and too vertical. Measure: the neck is about one head-width in diameter and connects lower than expected.

Planes of the Head

The face is made of angled flat planes that catch different amounts of light. Understanding planes prevents muddy rendering.

Simplify the head into: top plane (skull cap), front plane (forehead/cheeks/chin), side planes (temples/cheeks), bottom plane (jaw/under-chin).

Each plane change is a value change. Keep a plane consistent in value across its surface — don't blend within a plane, change at the edge.

Michael Hampton's "Design and Invention" has the most useful planes-of-the-head diagram. Study it repeatedly.

Core Shadow vs Reflected Light

The core shadow is the darkest part of the form — it sits at the plane turn, not at the deepest shadow edge.

Light source hits the lit side. The core shadow sits at the terminator (the line where form turns away from light). It is darker than the cast shadow.

Reflected light bounces back into the shadow from nearby surfaces. It is always darker than the midtone — never mistake it for a lit area.

Beginners place reflected light too light, making it look like a secondary light source. Reflected light is a property of shadow, not light.

Classical Portrait Lighting

Named lighting setups used by portrait painters to create mood and reveal form.

Rembrandt: 3/4 light with a small triangle of light on the shadow-side cheek. Creates depth and drama.

Split lighting: light from directly to the side, splitting the face 50/50. Very dramatic, used for character.

Broad vs short lighting: broad = lit side faces camera; short = shadow side faces camera. Short lighting slims the face.

Edge Control

Edges between value zones communicate plane quality and material. Controlling edges is what separates advanced rendering.

Hard edge = abrupt plane change or specular material. Soft edge = gentle plane turn or diffuse surface. Lost edge = form dissolves into shadow.

The face typically has: hard edges on brow ridges and jaw, soft edges on forehead and cheeks, lost edges where hair meets shadow.

Squinting at your reference flattens values and reveals edge quality more clearly than looking with open eyes.

Expression is Systemic

Expressions involve the entire face — brows, lids, cheeks, nose, AND mouth — not just the mouth.

Beginners draw happy = smile, sad = frown. But the eyes and brows carry more emotional information than the mouth alone.

A smile without raised cheeks and slightly squinted lids looks fake. A sad expression without inner brow raise looks like anger.

Cover the bottom half of a face — you can still read the emotion from brows and eyes alone. This is where expression lives.

Facial Action Units

Paul Ekman's FACS (Facial Action Coding System) catalogs every possible facial muscle movement.

Key units: AU1/2 (inner/outer brow raise), AU4 (brow lowerer), AU6 (cheek raiser), AU12 (lip corner pull), AU17 (chin raiser).

Happiness: AU6 + AU12. Sadness: AU1 + AU15 + AU17. Anger: AU4 + AU5 + AU23. Learning these unlocks nuanced expression.

FACS is used in animation, VFX, and psychology. Understanding it at a basic level makes your expressions far more readable.

Brow Language

The eyebrows are the most expressive feature on the human face and carry enormous emotional weight.

Inner brow raise (AU1): the most reliable sadness/concern signal. Very hard to fake voluntarily. Look for it in sincere vs posed emotion.

Brow lowerer + lid tightener (AU4 + AU5): anger and concentration look similar because they share these units.

A single raised brow communicates skepticism, inquiry, or condescension depending on context — context in expression is everything.

Asymmetry in Expressions

Real expressions are rarely perfectly symmetrical. Asymmetry reads as authentic; perfect symmetry reads as posed.

One side of the face often shows the expression more strongly — typically the left side for right-handed people (right hemisphere control).

Contempt is the only single-sided expression in Ekman's system — a unilateral lip corner raise is the tell.

Sight-Size Measuring

Hold your pencil at arm's length, lock your elbow, and use your thumb to mark a measurement on the pencil.

Use one measurement as your base unit (often one eye width). Then compare everything else to that unit: how many eye widths across is the nose?

Lock your elbow to maintain consistent arm extension. Move your whole body, not just your arm, when shifting between measurements.

Sight-size is the classical academic measuring method. It takes time to master, but it is the most reliable way to capture accurate proportions from life.

Comparative Measurement

Rather than measuring absolute distances, compare one feature to another: is the nose longer than the inter-eye distance?

Comparisons work across distances. Measure: eye-to-eye vs mouth width vs nose width. These relationships reveal the unique proportions of the face.

Ask questions: Is this eye higher or lower than the other? Is the jaw angle more or less than a right angle? Is the chin forward or recessed?

Every measurement you make should be comparative. Absolute measurements mean nothing without reference — comparative measurements reveal structure.

Negative Space

Train your eye by drawing the space around the subject rather than the subject itself.

The space between jaw and neck, between two features, between the head silhouette and the edge of your paper — these are all drawable shapes.

Drawing negative space bypasses the symbol-drawing habit (drawing what you think a nose looks like vs what you actually see).

Betty Edwards popularized this in "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It is one of the most powerful beginner exercises available.

Plumb Lines & Angles

Use a vertical plumb line to check how features relate to each other up and down, and horizontal lines to check angles.

Plumb line: hold your pencil vertically and note what is directly below each feature. Does the corner of the mouth fall under the pupil?

Angle checking: hold the pencil across the eyes — is one eye higher? Across the shoulders — how much do they tilt?

Every 15 minutes while drawing from life, stop and check one plumb-line relationship. This catches proportion drift before it compounds.

The Block-In

The most important stage of any portrait — establishing accurate proportions and placement before committing to rendering.

The block-in should be light, searchable, and correctable. Use long straight lines to find angles. No detail, no pressure.

A bad block-in that you render beautifully is still a bad portrait. Spend at least 30% of your total drawing time on the block-in.

Check five things before leaving the block-in: (1) head shape, (2) eye line at midpoint, (3) feature spacing, (4) tilt, (5) neck/shoulder relationship.

Massing Shadows

Unify all shadow areas into a single connected mass before breaking them into separate darks.

The shadow mass is a silhouette shape that sits against the lit side of the face. Draw this shape as a whole before rendering within it.

A well-massed shadow drawing looks good even unfinished. The light side reads as light, the shadow side reads as dark — this is the foundation.

Do not render within the shadow until the mass shape is correct. Premature detail in shadows destroys the value structure.

Rendering Sequence

Work from general to specific, large to small, dark to light (in most media).

General: get the five value zones right. Specific: refine within each zone — the highlight spot, the core shadow edge, the reflected light shape.

In graphite or charcoal: block in dark masses first, reserve lights, then add midtones. In oils: start with a tonal ground, build lights up.

Leave the highest detail for the focal point (usually one eye, or whichever feature the likeness depends on most). Let other areas stay softer.

Knowing When to Stop

Overworked portraits lose freshness, spontaneity, and often likeness. Knowing when to stop is a skill.

A portrait is finished when: (1) the value structure reads at a distance, (2) the likeness is captured, (3) additional marks don't improve it.

The "one more mark" trap: adding detail to fix a problem that is actually a proportion issue. More rendering cannot fix bad structure.

Photography tip: photograph your work in progress every 30 minutes. Compare the photos — often the one from an earlier stage looks better.

Deviation Mapping

Likeness is not achieved by drawing the face correctly — it is achieved by drawing the specific deviations from the canon correctly.

Before drawing any portrait: identify 4-5 ways this face deviates from average. Wider eyes? Lower forehead? Stronger jaw angle? Thinner lips?

Write these down and check them as you draw. Likeness often fails not because a feature is drawn badly but because its specific character is missed.

Caricature artists excel at this — they identify the main deviations and exaggerate them. Portrait artists do the same but at 1:1 accuracy.

Recovering Likeness

When a portrait looks wrong, the problem is almost always a proportion error — not a rendering error.

The fix: go back to comparative measurement. Measure the feature that feels wrong against a known-correct feature.

Common likeness killers: eyes placed too close together, nose too short, mouth too wide, jaw angle too square or too soft.

The "flipping" test: look at your drawing in a mirror or flip the reference horizontally. Proportion errors that you've normalized become obvious when flipped.

Feature Hierarchy for Likeness

Not all features contribute equally to likeness. Study which features lock in recognition.

The eyes (especially the eye shape and spacing) carry the most likeness information. Get the eyes right and the portrait will read.

The nose shape is often undervalued for likeness — nose length in particular. A nose that is 10% too long changes the read of the entire face.

Mouth and jaw shape provide secondary likeness but are more variable (mouth changes with expression). Prioritize eyes first, nose second.

Compositional Likeness

The placement of the head within the picture plane affects how the portrait reads — likeness is not just about features.

Portrait conventions: eyes in the upper third of the canvas, adequate space above the head (headroom), slight space in the direction of gaze.

The background value against the face edge shapes the silhouette — a dark background against a light cheek reads very differently from the reverse.

Notan thinking: the distribution of light and dark across the whole picture. A good notan design makes a portrait work even before you can see the features.

Child Proportions

Children's faces differ from adult faces structurally, not just in size. The cranium is proportionally much larger.

In a 1-year-old, the eyes sit below the halfway point of the skull. The face mass (nose, mouth, chin zone) is compressed.

As children grow, the middle and lower face lengthen. The eyes appear to "move up" toward the midpoint as the face grows downward.

Children have larger eyes relative to face size, smaller noses, rounded cheeks, and a compressed lower third — draw these differences deliberately.

Structures of Aging

Aging affects the face through three mechanisms: skin changes, fat loss/redistribution, and bone resorption.

Skin changes: reduced elasticity causes sagging, especially along the jowl line, neck, and below the eyes.

Fat changes: the fat pads of the cheek descend, creating nasolabial folds. The under-eye fat pad herniates forward.

Bone resorption: the jaw shrinks with age (especially after tooth loss), the orbit widens, and the overall facial skeleton recedes.

Structural Diversity

Different ethnic groups have real structural differences in facial features that go beyond skin tone.

Nose bridge height varies significantly. East Asian, sub-Saharan African, and Northern European faces have structurally different nose profiles.

Epicanthal folds affect eyelid anatomy in many East Asian faces — the lid fold is absent or different, and the eye draws differently as a result.

Lip volume, nose width, jaw prominence, and cheekbone height all show meaningful variation across human populations. Observe accurately — don't generalize.

Reference Diversity

The solution to drawing diverse faces well is simply to draw them — from observation and varied reference.

Your default "face" reflects who you have drawn most. Deliberately seek reference from underrepresented groups in your practice.

Use photo archives, life drawing sessions, and portraits across art history from non-Western traditions to expand your visual vocabulary.

The structural principles — skull, proportions, planes, values — apply universally. The specifics of those proportions vary. Observe carefully.

Style as Simplification

All art styles are simplifications of observed reality. The question is what you choose to preserve and what to omit.

Realism preserves: accurate proportions, value complexity, edge variation, material texture. It omits nothing from the visual experience.

Illustration simplifies: reduces value complexity, clarifies edges, often exaggerates key proportional features for visual clarity.

Cartoon omits: almost all value complexity, most edge variation, most secondary form — leaving only shape silhouette and primary expression.

Style Requires Structure

The strongest stylized artists have deep structural knowledge — they know what they're omitting and why.

Moebius, Bruce Timm, Yoji Shinkawa — these stylized artists understand anatomy deeply. Their simplifications are deliberate, not ignorant.

Without structural knowledge, style becomes copying surface mannerisms without understanding. It looks like a style but breaks under novel views.

Study the realism first. Learn the skull, the planes, the proportions. Then use that knowledge to choose your simplifications intelligently.

Style Analysis

Learn to reverse-engineer any artist's stylistic choices by asking systematic questions.

Eye shape: enlarged? Simplified to two curves? Anime-large? Angular? What about the iris — dot, simplified circle, or realistic?

Nose: two lines, a dot, full structure, or completely omitted? Mouth: single arc, full lip anatomy, or geometric shape?

Head shape: elongated? Rounded? Geometric? Where is the jaw — soft and rounded (feminine/cute), angular (heroic), or completely simplified?

Consistency in Style

A style must be internally consistent — the level of simplification should be the same across all features.

The most common beginner style mistake: realistic eyes with a cartoon nose, or detailed hair with schematic mouth. These inconsistencies break immersion.

Choose your simplification level and apply it everywhere. If the eyes are two curved lines, the nose and mouth should have the same graphic quality.

Consistent style also means consistent proportions. If you draw elongated heads, draw elongated heads every time — don't drift to realistic proportions.

Integration: Lessons Working Together

A great portrait is not any single lesson applied well — it is all lessons applied simultaneously.

Structure (Lesson 1-2) → Features (3-4) → Framing (5) → Lighting (6) → Expression (7) → Observation (8) → Rendering (9) → Likeness (10).

The mark of a developing portrait artist is that these no longer feel like separate skills but like one fluid attention to the subject.

When a portrait fails, trace the failure back: is it a structure problem (proportions)? A lighting problem (values)? A likeness problem (deviations)? The diagnosis points to the lesson.

Personal Workflow

Develop your own repeatable portrait workflow — the sequence of decisions that takes you from blank page to finished portrait.

Any workflow should have three phases: planning (gesture, proportion, light setup), execution (shadow mass, feature construction, rendering), and review (likeness check, edges, finish).

Resist skipping phases. The temptation to jump to rendering before the block-in is solid destroys more portraits than anything else.

Your workflow will differ based on medium: graphite, charcoal, oils, and digital all reward slightly different sequences. Develop one per medium.

Self-Critique Practice

The ability to look at your own work clearly — without defensiveness or dismissiveness — is the meta-skill that drives improvement.

The critique checklist: (1) Do proportions read correctly? (2) Is there a clear value structure? (3) Is the likeness captured? (4) Are edges varied? (5) Is there a focal point?

Compare to your reference. Overlap them in your mind or on screen. Where does your drawing diverge? Is that divergence intentional (style) or unintentional (error)?

Seek critique from others whose work you respect. Self-critique has blind spots — another eye catches what yours has normalized.

The Iteration Habit

Improvement in portrait drawing comes from consistent practice with deliberate feedback loops, not from occasional heroic sessions.

Schedule: one short portrait study per week minimum (30-60 min). One longer study per month. Regular life drawing sessions.

Keep a sketchbook of face studies. Date them. Looking back at 3 months of work reveals progress that is invisible in the day-to-day.

Draw the same person twice: once at the beginning of a study period, once at the end. The comparison is more motivating than any abstract progress metric.
